Conan Exiles is an interesting game concept, for it resembles our life itself. It is a vast open world sandbox wrapped around a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). But Conan Exiles does not emphasize on killing other players or being the last one standing, like the insanely popular Battle Royale typed game.

Conan Exiles emphasizes on cooperating with your other fellow players in order to survive the harsh and tough setting. Make a stupid move and die, you may lose all your gear, weapons, other loot and even progression. You’ll be forced to start from the very beginning. Conan Exiles is inspired by Conan the Barbarian.

Conan Exiles Launch Trailer

Conan Exiles, officially released on 8th of March 2018, is now available for Microsoft Window PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In actuality, the game has been around for a rather much longer period of time, 15 months to be precise. It was the early access stage of the game which helped the developers fix a bunch of bugs and improve a lot of other aspects of the game as well. Some people even said that the game was ‘literally unplayable’ at its initial release as an early access and now its ‘one of the best games of its genres’. It witnessed a complete turnaround.

Conan Exiles – True Sandbox Gameplay Experience

Conan Exiles will offer you an array of choices and options, starting off with the server you choose to play on. There is a multitude of servers which cater to different playstyles like ‘Player VS Player’, ‘Player vs Environment’ and even ‘Role Play’ in the same world.

Then you witness a human hung on a cross, similar to the one on which Jesus was crucified. There you proceed to create your custom character. There are tons of options, regulated by sliders, to create your character. It is fairly easy but presents a large range of customizations. Once you’re finished with the physical attributes, you proceed to Religion. It won’t have a severe role to play until much later in the game.

A short cut-scene takes the control in which Conan, the character on the cover, himself rescues you from the cross. Finally, you find yourself in control.

You start from nothing- no clothes, no weapons, no food, no skills, no provisions. Each passing minute, your hunger and thirst depletes, which you must refill in order to survive. Basically, you just scavenge the world to gather resources in the beginning.

Note: ‘Player VS Player’ mode would be really difficult at the beginning since you start with nothing and will probably die before you can build a house to save yourself. You’ll even encounter AI enemies such as predators or other fictional ones.

Experience points work as a milestone of progression. You can earn them by performing even minuscule activities such as chopping wood or hacking stone, basically for staying engaged in the game. You can invest these skill points can be invested in either Health, Stamina, Damage or Weight. Moreover, you must learn recipes and gather material to craft gear and weapons.

Once you’ve made a settlement, you can find in-game AI-controlled people and enslave them by defeating them physically and mentally. And then-then they’ll obey you. Some may have the skill to craft you special gear while others may guard your settlement while you are not present.

The combat, one of the most major aspects of the game, is mediocre. Yes, there is a variety of weapons in different classes such as ranged, heavy, one handed etc, but the animations are not really smooth. It robs the experience of a satisfying combat from Conan Exiles.

Decisions in Conan Exiles – Choose Your Own Path

Once beyond the basic sandbox experience of Conan Exiles, you can be anything. You can be a mighty hunter, hunting the fiercest of beasts and collecting a bounty for the same. You can choose to be a sole sly thief, who robs the settlements and survives. Also, you can collect a bunch of followers and lead them to gather resources. The possibilities are endless in Conan Exiles. You crave and create your own story.

An Endless World of Opportunities and Beauties

I’d be undermining Conan Exiles if I said its world was just ‘vast’ or ‘beautiful’. It is beautifully vast and vastly beautiful. The world of Conan Exiles is breathtaking and spreads vast, covering different sorts of climate and geography.

You may find yourself in a desert, where there is a shortage of water and thirst depletes faster. On the other hand, you may find yourself in a forest where there is plenty of food and water, but predators lurk in every corner. You may then wander into a city, away from predators and amidst the best of foods and drinks, but then you’ll be surrounded by thieves and mercenaries.

So each different region has its own merits and demerits. Moreover, the developer Funcom is eager to continuously support and add new regions. Recently, with a mere day of official release, they added ‘The Frozen North’ region.

There is also a huge selection of weapons and armors to choose from as you progress through the game. The details on the gear are fine and accurate.

The Bottom Line

Once you spend some a few hours or so with Conan Exiles, you’ll probably begin to like it. Perhaps initially you may struggle to find resources, gear, shelter or even survive. But once you brave through that, you’ll be greeted with a beautiful world, satisfying progression, and even straightforward base building, the condition is you’re ready to devote fruitless hours into the game initially.
