Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery aims to fulfill the childhood dream of our generation to attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The game brings the magic to IOS and Android devices. In fact, Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery is the first official mobile game of the Harry Potter franchise.
Hogwarts Mystery promises you a magical journey from a lowly first-year student to a full-fledged wizard through the journey of seven years, each year comprising of various chapters. Although the does fulfill this promise, there is a cost to pay. A rather hefty cost.
It’s also worth noting that at the moment there are only 3 years, each comprising of 10 chapters. The later years will be probably added in later updates.
Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery – Story
The story of Hogwarts Mystery takes place four years after the birth of Harry Potter and years before he actually joined Hogwarts. So Potter and his friends don’t make an appearance in the game.
You begin as a custom character of your choice and journey begins as soon as you receive the acceptance letter from Hogwarts. The next thing you know is that you now have a new best friends named Rowan. A conversation with him or her (depending on the gender of your character) reveals that your elder brother was expelled from Hogwarts in an attempt to find out the Cursed Vaults and has been missing since.
The professors and students at Hogwarts alike have developed an image about you based on your brother. You must brave the criticism of your teachers and fellows alike, although you can choose if you wish to resolve the matters peacefully or forcefully.
Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery – Gameplay
Hogwarts Mystery’s gameplay is limited and unexciting, to say the least. All you have to do is tap, watch and wait. Also, despite being a single player adventure, the game requires an active internet connection in order to be played.
There are mainly two sorts of activities. The first one is Main Story missions such as potion and magic classes or other objectives. The second one is ‘Friendship’ missions, a sort of side missions that emphasizes on dialogues based gameplay with other fellows at Hogwarts. The choices you make in these missions define your relationship with your friends and your attributes. There is an excess of former missions over the later ones.
The Main Story type missions require stars to beat. You earn stars by completing menial tap-based tasks within the mission. You need energy, an in-game currency, to complete tasks. And this is where the problem arises.
You only have a limited amount of energy, 24 at the beginning, which is just to low to complete even the first task after the tutorial.
Energy refills automatically. One unit is recharged every 4 minutes. A total of an hour and a half is required completely refill the energy. This totally ruins the experience.
The game then prompts you to purchase diamonds (another in-game currency) with real-world money, which you can further use to purchase Energy. You can’t get the best out of the game without spending real money and indulge in microtransactions.
If you choose to wait instead of spending money, you’ll have to keep an eye out for the time limit. If you run out of this time limit, all your progress of that mission will be lost and Energy won’t be refunded. The time limit ranges from half an hour to even a day and a half.
You are hit with the game’s first paywall merely 15 minutes after you begin the game. As soon as you finish the tutorial, your character is trapped in Devil’s Snare and you run out of Energy very soon.
If you suppose that’s bad, worse things are yet to come. You have to wait 8 hours of real-world time before you can unlock the next mission and progress the story. The only other way around this is to spend diamonds to unlock these mission as per your convenience.
Then there is the second type of missions of Hogwarts Mystery. It is dialogue driven. These do not require energy, yet you have to earn stars in order to complete the mission. You’ll be given a certain number of chances in which you have to pick from the most appropriate dialogue out of the three. The options you make in such missions will affect your relationships with other students at Hogwarts. It will even define your character in terms of the three attributes- Strength, Sympathy, and Knowledge. These attributes and their respective levels will affect the dialogue options you get.

A not-so-magical World – Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery
You start out by creating your own custom character naming it, yet even that is limited by microtransactions. You’re forced to choose from basic facial features and hairstyles lest you want to invest money in the game.
You’re free to change almost all of the characteristics such as hairstyle and color, skin color, features and your name even after initial character creation. Yet, you cannot your gender which you decide as soon as you step into the game.
You’re free to choose your house rather than depending on a quiz, but it won’t have a serious impact on the gameplay. Moreover, it can’t be changed later unlike facial features, clothes or name.
The world of Hogwarts Mystery itself is intricately crafted with a variety of references from the movies and books. It is beautiful in its own way. However, you cannot freely roam the magical school. You’ll have to just tap on the location from a list.
