9th June 2018 at 11 A.M. was the inauguration of E3 2018 in Los Angeles. The show started off with a blast as EA, the first presenter of the show, revealed tons of new games as well as showcased a few old games such as Anthem.
Anthem E3 2018 Gameplay Trailer
Anthem at E3
Let’s start off with the first reveal at the show. Well, not technically a reveal since Anthem was showcased at the last E3 as well, but this time, we got a detailed look at the features and gameplay and even got a released date for the game.
Bioware’s sci-fi third-person shooter comes out on 22nd of February, 2019 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Its release date coincides with that of Days Gone, a much anticipated PS4 exclusive which we’ve been seeing for the past two E3s. So Anthem will have a very tough competition to succeed among the PlayStation gamers, but it shouldn’t have much problem on Xbox One and PC.
Although an online co-op adventure game, Anthem will feature a story nonetheless. In fact, the presenters even said that the goal of Anthem is to avoid ‘diluting’ the story by keeping it away from action based combat gameplay. What they basically meant was that all the players will share a common world where they can go on missions and exploration, but all the players, despite the mission they are playing, will experience nighttime simultaneously. However, you can play the game all alone as well and multiplayer will be only a ‘choice’. But there is no Player VS Player mode as of now.
Anthem – Story and Gameplay
Once you’re done with a mission, you can return to your base which is a totally single-player experience. At your base, you will interact with AI characters and NPCs in a fashion that Bioware is known for. Here, you’ll also keep and upgrade all your “javelins” or the exoskeleton armors. You can even customize these “javelins” in terms of cosmetics as well as combat.
In terms of story, you are rookie gun for hire whose ultimate goal is to defeat the evil Dominion, a group of humans who are trying to Anthem of Creation, a powerful artifact which was used to create the world, into a weapon. Meanwhile, you’ll also have to tame the creatures of the hostile world, a concept I found somewhat similar to Monster Hunter: World.
Then the gameplay was presented which featured four players, each with a specialized armor. First, they were flying through the open landscape, then paved their way through enemies and ultimately to the goal. It was pretty fantastic.
EA has a bad reputation for inculcating a lot of loot-boxes in their games. Anthem, however, like Battlefield V, will feature only cosmetic loot-boxes which will have no impact on the gameplay.
Unravel 2 Trailer
Unravel Two at E3
The next big thing that EA surprisingly showcased at E3 was Unravel Two, the sequel to the much-loved platforming adventure Unravel. It looks as good as the first one, if not better, but emphasizes on co-op to swing around the world and avoid obstacles. However, you can play it alone as well where you’ll control both Yarny and the other yarn character,
The biggest surprise was when EA announced that you’ll be able to purchase the game on PS4, Xbox One, and PC as soon as the E3 presentation ended. Never in the history of games has a game releases so shortly after its announcement.
Next thing that came around at EA’s E3 stage was Battlefield V, a game which was teased before as well. As announced previously as well, the game features a WW2 setting and a destructible environment. Moreover, no only you can crush building down with your tank, you can jump through windows with your character on foot. The best thing about it is once again “No loot boxes. No premium pass,”. Looks like EA took such a hard toll that they’re removing loot boxes from all of their games.
Royale Reimagined at E3
The biggest and the boldest reveal, however, was the introduction of Battle Royale mode named “royale reimagined”. A Battle Royale game in WW2 with realistic physics does sound interesting in theory, let’s see how EA has witnessed it.
A piece of Battlefield V’s multiplayer gameplay was shown at EA’s E3 conference. But you can also expect a bit more of the gameplay at Microsoft’s Xbox E3 conference tomorrow.
Then EA revealed a ton of stuff on Star wars license. First off is the new additions to the Battlefront 2 which will be based on Clone Wars. There will a new squad system, a new command and capture mode. New heroes include General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker.
Jedi: Fallen Order E3 Gameplay
Jedi: Fallen Order at E3
Secondly is the new Star Wars game called Jedi: Fallen Order. Nothing was actually revealed about the game, save the title itself. But it’s clear that you’ll play as a third person Jedi with lightsabers and all. It’s expected to release during the holiday season of 2019, which is somewhere from late November to early January.
The best game I saw at EA’s E3 conference is Sea of Solitude, developed with indie German studio Jo-Mei Games and published by EA. Although a normal game is supposed to make you feel good, Sea of Solitude is all about loneliness and depression.
It’s an adventure game featuring a character named Kay that focuses on exploration in a lonely world. The presenters described it as “On her search to change, she soon finds out that her biggest enemies are not the huge monsters that she meets on her way through Sea of Solitude, but something way more dangerous.”
At last, EA did something unexpected- hosted a stage demo of Command & Conquer: Rivals, a competitive mobile game. And it way too boring and uninteresting among all the other things that EA had showcased.
